My name is Ian Chang. I am a freelance first mate and deckhand. Currently, I am First Mate aboard a Westport 106, Sunseeker 82, and Sunseeker 76 based in Marina Del Rey/Los Angeles.

I have extensive experience on both private and charter vessels. I was born and raised in Alaska, and my first job was working for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. I’m no stranger to serious seas. My longest trip to date was a double-handed delivery of a Lagoon 620 from Seattle, WA, to Ventura, CA, with a charter in San Francisco, with a broken autopilot.

Before I switched to yachting, I ran my own marine maintenance business. My knowledge base is strong on the engineering side. I own a 40’ sailboat and cruise the Channel Islands often.

I am very well spoken, polite, and professional. I’m a nonsmoker and clean-cut. I have a gift of working really well with others and especially bringing teams together. I have a current STCW certification and am working on my 100T Masters license.
